An estimated 100,000 people die of snake bites each year, with over 5 million bitten, half of them by dangerous venomous snakes.

David Warrell’s interest in the treatment of snakebite victims has taken him to Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Latin America. The main aim of his research has been to improve the clinical management of snakebite victims in small hospitals in the rural areas of tropical countries where most of these accidents occur, especially the use of antivenoms, the only available antidotes. Integral to this work has been discovering which species of snakes were responsible and how best they might be avoided.
